Contextual inquiry
A user research method that identifies requirements by combining interviews and observation in users’ actual working environments.
The key is to conduct it where users normally work, rather than in an observation lab. Interviews and observations take place in the actual context in which users use a product or system. Users are not merely interview subjects: they explain their work and interpret its meaning together with the researcher.
