A derivative in which all but one of the variables is considered a constant. For example, the partial derivative of f(x,y)f(x, y) with respect to xx is the derivative of ff considered as a function of xx alone (that is, keeping yy constant). The partial derivative of ff with respect to xx focuses only on how xx is changing and ignores all other variables in the equation.1
