Hedonistic utilitarianism
A type of utilitarianism, also called classical utilitarianism.
The view that pleasure or happiness is the only positive intrinsic value, and pain or suffering the only negative intrinsic value. It does not deny that pain can lead to good outcomes. In other words, pain can have positive instrumental value. Nietzsche’s criticism of hedonistic utilitarianism overlooks this point.1
