<공리주의>의 핵심 원리. 간혹 이 원리에 따라 숙고한 결과, 당대의 도덕 상식에 위배되는 결론이 도출되는 경우가 있는데 후대에 돌이켜 생각해보면 당대의 상식이 잘못된 경우가 많다. 예: "동성애는 죄악이다", "여성에 대한 차별은 정당하다" 등.

지금 시대에는 상당수 사람들이 동성애가 범죄라거나 [성차별](https://wiki.g15e.com/pages/Sexism.txt)이 당연하다고 여기지 않는다. 하지만 여전히 [종차별](https://wiki.g15e.com/pages/Speciesism.txt)에 대해서는 당연하다고 여기는데 아마도 후대에는 바뀔거라고 믿는다.
