<Great Rift Valley>의 형성(See [Formation of the Great Rift Valley](https://wiki.g15e.com/pages/Formation%20of%20the%20Great%20Rift%20Valley.txt))으로 인해 건조한 사바나 환경이 조성되자 그 지역의 <대형 유인원들>은 <원숭이들>과 경쟁에서 불리해진다. 사바나의 짧은 관목 숲에서는 몸집이 작은 원숭이들이 대형 유인원들에 비해 유리했기 때문.

이에 따라 약 4.4 mya 무렵 이 지역의 <대형 유인원>은 [이족보행](https://wiki.g15e.com/pages/Bipedalism.txt)을 하는 <Australopithecus anamensis>와 <Australopithecus afarensis>로 진화하였으며, 이 중 <Australopithecus anamensis>가 현생 인류의 직계 조상을 포함한다.

Advantages of bipedalism:[^1]

- Exposing less body surface to the sun decreases the impact of radiation and the need for cooling.
- The ability of the primate to use the forelimbs for other purposes.

- Defensive effect of greater height.

Costs of bipedalism:[^1]

- Increased mechanical pressure on the neck, the spine, and all the joints of the legs.
- Reliance on the feet for walking made them less able to function for climbing.
- Narrowing of the hips. (산도가 좁아짐에 따른 출산 문제)
