# A World Where Search Results Arrive a Month After You Enter a Search Query

Imagine a world where entering a search query once costs 10 million won, and the result comes back a month later.

## Parable

In this hypothetical world, there exist tools, methodologies, related industries, and experts for doing web searches well.

- **Industry-by-industry search query handbook**: The top search query experts in each field carefully select 100,000 optimal search queries and publish a revised edition every year. It is organized in dictionary form so that you can easily look up the optimal query by field and by situation. In the 2022 edition, a "metaverse" chapter was added, and the total was revised from 10 volumes to 11 volumes.
- **Search query discovery workshop**: An ideation workshop for discovering the optimal search query that can best find the information you want. It usually runs for about two days, with an overnight stay, and the venue is chosen, as much as possible, as a quiet place far away from the company.
- **Search query expert**: You can explain to a search query expert in the relevant field what information you are trying to find and get advice on what query would be best to enter.
- **Search agency**: There are specialized agencies that handle nothing but information-search work on behalf of clients. You can outsource only up to the stage of finding the query, or you can hand over the analysis of the search results page as a turnkey service as well. Because the search results page is so precious and scarce, concepts like <information overload> do not exist. One of the key capabilities of a search agency is the ability to read and organize every link contained on the search results page "without missing any."
- **Search query quality [heuristic evaluation](https://wiki.g15e.com/pages/Heuristic%20evaluation.txt)**: There is a checklist for quickly judging whether the search query we are about to enter is actually appropriate. But it is hard to get much effect just by having anyone use the checklist; if possible, it is better for the evaluation to be carried out by an expert who majored in "Search Linguistics" or obtained a related certification.
- **Search result analysis**: Since the search results page obtained at the cost of 10 million won is so precious, search experts gather and conduct an "analysis session" to analyze the results in depth. The results of search analysis are usually produced in the form of an "analysis report," and are often presented to executives.

One day, a startup appeared saying it had succeeded in developing a technology that could perform a search in just 1 second, and that it would make money with this technology. Its revenue model was to put ads on the search results page. At demo day, it demonstrated the technology flawlessly, but the expert feedback was negative.

- "What exactly are we supposed to use fast search for? Isn't the bottleneck the stage of finding the query to enter, not the speed of the search?"
- "Most companies only search once or twice a year anyway. How much value could there be in a service people use once or twice a year? And who would advertise on such a site?"
- "When people look for information, don't they usually go to a bookstore or a library? Libraries have librarians who can provide professional help, but could ordinary people really use this service? What percentage of the population do you think majored in Search Linguistics?"
- "Search is something only large corporations do, and most startups don't search. The market size would be far too limited."

## Lesson

Why does the feedback from the demo-day experts above sound ridiculous? Because it assumes a situation where everything else in the current world remains exactly the same and only that one technology changes. People often look only at the current market, narrowly defined by the constraints of technology, and focus on things like market share within that market or cost reduction. But in many cases, the new opportunities created by the change are vastly larger, and yet people almost never see that side of it.

The more it is a field in which one has expertise, and the deeper that expertise is, the more this tendency seems to appear. Most so-called "expert" feedback is like this. Of course, it may also be that this happens less because they are experts and more because they are outsiders pretending to be experts.

- If software development cost and time converged to 0, how would software engineering or the development process change? (Reference: [Software Engineering in the AI Era](https://wiki.g15e.com/en/pages/Software%20engineering%20in%20AI%20era.txt))
- If qualitative research could be done in 1 second, how would the fields of UX research or market research change?
- If smartwatches were equipped with a <blood glucose> measurement function so that anyone could get immediate feedback when they eat, how would food culture and related industries change?
